In Ontario, the option to sell directly to the private grain trade is referred to as direct marketing and is a relatively new program that has only been offered on an unrestricted basis since 2003.
Producers have been quick to adopt direct marketing with 83% of Ontario's crop sold direct in 2003 with 12% of the wheat crop going through the Ontario Wheat Producer's Marketing Board (OWPMB) through its cash bids and forward price contracts and 5% through the pools.
There are a number of positive benefits that have emerged from direct marketing including:
The ability to direct fusarium infected wheat in the U.S. milling market.
